about

I’d had this melody and lyric drawn out over a set of chords in my back pocket for a while. It was a kind of melancholy thing about surviving the imperfections of a maturing relationship but I was never sure whether it had any life outside of my humming it occasionally.
Eric Bazilian and I had become friends after an opportunity came up for me to play bass with him for a show. Being the gracious guy he is, it wasn’t long before he extended his studio to me and we were in there writing songs together. Our first was a prog type of a thing called “cobwebs.” I was pleasantly surprised to find what a huge fan of progressive rock Eric is. At our next session I sat down at the piano and started playing those chords and lyrics I’d been carrying around. Right away Eric perked up and that infectious smile came across his face as he proceeded to play me a chimey guitar progression he’d been working on. He’d even gone so far as to start a rhythm track with a breakdown dirge at the end. So rarely do disparate parts come together with such ease and continuity. In the same key, the same tempo, and without any real effort we strung these parts together into a manageable arrangement. I quickly wrote some freestyle verses and we ended that day feeling like we had something good.
Eric moved out of the US not long after, leaving our chance to get together pretty unlikely. But like a good friend he called one night to check in and it made me want to finish this song we had started. I sat in my now NY studio for a couple nights trying to muster a feeling about what the song was supposed to be. It eventually came and I finished the lyric. I sent it to Eric and he came back with all the harmonies and accents you hear as well as some slide guitar w/ Beatle freak ADT on it- For those who kno… These details really gave the song a life that we could have only wished for at the onset.
Since there is a long instrumental section, I tried tirelessly to play a solo on a few different instruments. Nothing worked at all. Then it dawned on me that Brett Rosenberg always comes up with something authentic and expressive - a total ringer for when I’m in need. I suggested a two stage solo like in Steely Dan’s “Do it Again” where guitar is followed by synth. The solos that Brett delivered mimicked that but are so beyond anything I could have played or imagined. It was a true gift to be given back such lively and moving pieces in their own right.
It was now complete and I really feel that the three of us achieved de facto pop perfection with this one. I mean, who the heck am I to claim this? Idk… what was it Bruce Johnston said with unfettered confidence? “I write the songs!!!” Goddang right;)
